HOME-BUILDING ADVICE
Building a home while you live abroad: how remote ownership works in practice
How to run a home build in Jaipur from another country: who acts for you, how decisions are made, and how you keep control of progress and payments.

You can build a home in Jaipur while living abroad if you set up three things first: one accountable contact on the ground, regular site updates you can verify, and a payment plan tied to completed work. Distance then affects your travel, not your control over the project.
Agree the ground rules before work starts
- Name one person at the builder who answers every message and is responsible for your project.
- Decide who can approve changes. If a relative will act for you, say so in writing.
- Confirm in writing how decisions are recorded, for example by email, with a short summary after every call.
- If you want someone to sign or collect documents for you, take advice from a qualified lawyer on the right authorisation.
Make design decisions on screen
Most design work needs no visit. Review drawings and 3D views on a video call, ask for markups, and approve in writing. For finishes, ask for samples of tiles, stone, wood and paint to be sent to a family member or couriered, because colour on a screen is never exact.
Site updates you can trust
Agree the rhythm of updates before the first day of work, such as a fixed day each week, and the form they take.
- Dated photos and short videos of each area, taken from the same angles each time.
- A short written note: what was done, what is next, what is delayed and why.
- A live video walk-through on request, especially before anything is covered by plaster or concrete.
- A named stage checklist so you know what finished means.
- Photos of materials as they arrive, so you can confirm they match what was agreed.
Keep payments simple and traceable
- Pay against completed stages named in the contract, not against dates.
- Pay by bank transfer and keep written receipts for every payment.
- Check rules on sending money to India with your bank or a financial adviser.
- Hold back a final payment until the handover checklist is complete.
Plan your visits
Even with excellent updates, one or two well-timed visits are worth it. The best moments are when the structure is complete and when finishing is under way, because you can still change fittings and positions. Share your travel dates early so the team can prepare a proper walk-through.
Time zones and communication
Pick a fixed weekly call that suits both time zones, and put questions in writing so they do not wait for the next call. Our FAQs cover other common questions from families who live away from Jaipur.
