Layers of Light: Planning Daylight, Ambient and Task Lighting Room by Room
How to combine daylight, ambient and task lighting so each room in your Jaipur home looks calm and works well.

Good lighting is built in three layers: daylight, ambient light for general brightness, and task light for work. A single bright ceiling fixture cannot do all three. Plan the layers before the electrical points are fixed, and each room will feel comfortable in the morning, in the evening and when you need to read or cook.
Start with daylight
Jaipur has strong sun for much of the year, so the aim is to use the light without the glare and heat. Note which walls get direct sun and when.
- Sheer curtains over a heavier lining let you soften the light or block it in the afternoon.
- North and east windows give gentle, even light that suits study areas and kitchens.
- West-facing windows may need deeper sunshades, blinds or louvres to control heat in summer.
- Light wall and ceiling colours bounce daylight deeper into the room.
Add ambient light for the whole room
Ambient light is the soft background glow. Cove lighting, a false ceiling with recessed lights, or wall washers all work. Keep lights on a separate circuit from task lights so you can change the mood.
Warm white light, commonly around 2700 to 3000 K, feels restful in living rooms and bedrooms. Fit dimmers wherever you relax.
Place task light where you work
Task light is focused light on a job. It should fall on the work surface without casting your own shadow on it.
- Kitchen: LED strips under wall cabinets to light the counter, usually in a neutral white around 4000 K.
- Study: an adjustable desk lamp on the side opposite your writing hand.
- Dressing area: lights on both sides of the mirror, not just above it.
- Bedside: a reading lamp that does not disturb your partner.
Plan room by room
- Living room: cove or recessed ambient light, a floor or table lamp for reading, and accent light on art or a textured wall.
- Bedroom: low ambient light, bedside lamps and a switch you can reach from the bed.
- Kitchen: bright, even ambient light plus under-cabinet task light.
- Bathroom: shadow-free light at the mirror and a moisture-rated fixture over the shower.
- Entrance and corridors: a soft light that welcomes guests and guides you safely at night.
Think about switches and points early
Decide the switch groups and socket positions while the walls are still open. Lamps need sockets, dimmers need compatible fittings, and two-way switches at the bedroom door and bedside save many night-time walks. Changing wiring after the finishes are done is far costlier.
